Slangenpand – Een icoon van de Amsterdamse Spuistraat
Spuistraat 199, beter bekend als het voormalig Slangenpand, is een van de meest markante panden in het hart van Amsterdam. Het oudste kraakpand van Amsterdam was oorspronkelijk in gebruik als kantoorruimte voor het Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau tot de jaren zeventig en kwam daarna leeg te staan.
In 1994 en 1999 werd de gevel van het pand voorzien van een opvallende muurschildering van een slang, ontworpen door kunstenares Patries van Elsen. Deze kleurrijke slang, die symbool stond voor creativiteit en verzet tegen speculatie, gaf het pand zijn bijnaam: het Slangenpand . Gedurende meer dan drie decennia fungeerde het Slangenpand als een broedplaats voor kunstenaars en creatieven. Het bood ruimte aan ateliers, exposities en culturele evenementen, en werd een symbool van de Amsterdamse kraakbeweging .
Vandaag de dag is het Slangenpand gerenoveerd en maakt het deel uit van het project 'De Keizer', een modern wooncomplex in het centrum van Amsterdam. Hoewel de kleurrijke gevel is verdwenen, blijft de geschiedenis van het pand voortleven als een herinnering aan een tijdperk van creativiteit en activisme in de stad.

HISTORY
Slangenpand – An Icon of the Spuistraat
Spuistraat 199, better known as the "Slangenpand" (Snake Building), is one of the most unique buildings in the heart of Amsterdam, known as the city's oldest squatted property.
In 1994 and 1999, the facade was decorated with a striking mural of a snake, designed by artist Patries van Elsen. This colourful snake, symbolising creativity and resistance to speculation, gave the building its nickname: the Slangenpand. For over three decades, the Slangenpand served as a creative hub for artists. It hosted studios, exhibitions, and cultural events, becoming a symbol of Amsterdam’s squatting movement.
Today, the Slangenpand has been renovated and is now part of the ‘De Keizer’ project — a modern residential complex in central Amsterdam. Though the vibrant mural is gone, the building’s history lives on as a tribute to a time of creativity and activism in the city.
